Rap is Poetry

This is an argument from my opinion.

It's time to fight back that's what Huey said
2 shots in the dark now Huey's dead
I got love for my brother but we can never go nowhere
unless we share with each other
We gotta start makin' changes
learn to see me as a brother instead of 2 distant strangers
and that's how it's supposed to be
How can the Devil take a brother if he's close to me?
I'd love to go back to when we played as kids
but things changed, and that's the way it is

Is this poetry or is it rap? In my two arguments I will prove to you that rap is poetry. I believe that rap is poetry and I will show it to you and prove it to you.

"What is Poetry?

Poetry is an Art that is based mostly on sounds.  Because it is Art, it is an expression of the self, and because it is poetry, the best expressions use sound to make clear what is being expressed.  Many poems rhyme for this reason, but rhyme is not the only tool of sound that a poet can use; two other major tools are meter and stress.  As artists and readers we might notice that the best poems are the ones we can read out loud or hear in our heads, where the sound and meter create a definite, unique impression that communicates some of what the artist intended.   As students we've been taught these tools and many theories on poetry but the sole, unifying purpose of any poem is that it is Art."       ~Micaella.                                                                               I agree with her 100% and if they changed the word poetry to rap would it make sense? Yes, it would. Just because black African Americans are the majority of rappers does not mean it is raw vocabulary or slang and it does not mean rap  is bad. I like to compare rap and poetry a lot. I think rap should be taught in school. I found an  article that was talking about a teacher who was teaching rap literature as a course in his high school. If you like poetry you would like rap because it is a different type of poetry and it has a beat and it has a vibe to it.

Here is an example: I want you to read the text at the beginning of my article.  First read it with a beat and then read it like it was a poem and then you make the choice. From my personal opinion I think they both sound like rap or poetry. Why is it rap and why is it poetry? Well let me answer this: rap is supposed to rhyme and a lot of poetry rhymes. Rap has verses and poetry has stanzas. You can keep on going and going  to compare poetry to rap but I guess you get the point. I don't want to make you believe that rap is poetry I am just trying to convince you.

In my opinion, poetry is supposed to rhyme.  The lyrics of the songs rhyme.  Therefore, it is poetry.  I also think that its supposed to come out of the heart and what the person is saying has to mean a lot and has to make sense and it has to have meaning and have something to do with the world - it is going to change people's minds and it is an opinion.

Rap is considered poetry because it means something and it comes out of the heart. I think poetry is supposed to rhyme, it is supposed to have a beat and the next rhyme has to come at a certain place in the next sentence.  When I said it has to come out of the heart, I don't mean it is all happy feelings. There are angry and sad feelings, too.  Rap is also considered poetry because it has rhythm, beats, and music.

I hope you liked my arguments and I hope you changed or improved your thoughts about rap and poetry. This was a very interesting project for me. I would like to thank you for taking the time to read my article. Oh and by the way, about the text on the top: is it poetry or rap? Well you will have to find out on your own  because, frankly, I don't know.

I WOULD LIKE TO THANK ALL  MY TEACHERS FOR THEIR HELP ON THIS WEB PAGE. I COULD NOT HAVE DONE IT WITH OUT THEM.
THANK YOU.
