Layered Curriculum


Layered Curriculum is an approach to writing curriculum that was developed by Kathy Nunley. Essentially it allows for multiple levels of learning to occur within the same classroom. Activities are organized according to Bloom's Taxonomy:

Level C Basic Understanding - Bloom's Knowledge,Comprehension, and some Application
Level B Application - Bloom's Application and some Analysis
Level A Critical Analysis - Bloom's Analysis, Synthesis, and Evaluation

Students are given a wide range of activities to choose from in order to construct their own educational goals for the unit. Activities usually access each of Gardner's eight intelligences

C level assignments are graded by way of oral defense. This holds the student accountable for their learning.

Today, my students can't slip by. They are accountable for learning something. You can't lie, cheat, or steal your way through an oral assessment. You either know what you've learned or you don't.

Oral defense allows for clarity and individualized instruction. It reduces cheating. Even the student who copies the answers to a book assignment will have to study that material so they can defend it orally and receive credit. Therefore, to earn points, actual learning is required.
